Employing People - How to Manage the Interview Process Well

One of the most important steps when it comes to employing people is conducting an interview. If you have advertised your job opening in the correct places then you will definitely get quite a few applicants. It is not usually possible to hire a person based simply on his or her résumé because you need to meet the person in order to assess his or her suitability to join your company. Lots of people have fantastic résumés because of their fancy educational qualifications or work experience but they might not be entirely suitable to work in your organization.

An interview is the penultimate step of employing people during which you will select people who seem to fit the bill. The only thing left to do is offer them a job and hope that they will accept it. You have to conduct an interview with a great deal of care and should therefore do sufficient preparation. This will help you ask the right questions that will enable you to select the right person for the job.

If you have received many applications for each job position available (which is only to be expected when the unemployment rates are very high) then it is a good idea to prune them down to a manageable number. You can do this by conducting a telephone interview first so that you can weed out the candidates who are absolutely unsuitable for the job. This will leave you with people who have sufficient knowledge of what it takes to do the job.

When it comes to the final interviews, you need to focus on attributes other than knowledge of the job. If a person has the necessary experience and educational qualifications then it is fairly obvious that the person will know how to do the job. You should however try to find out whether the person has kept in touch with technological advances that concern your particular business. The business environment is constantly changing and only people who are able to adapt to change and use it effectively are successful at their jobs.
What you need to look for in addition is whether the person has the right attribute to succeed. It is also important to find out whether the person will be able to work along with you or any other people at work. If the new person does not fit in at the workplace then conflict will ensue. That this is bad for business is extremely obvious. You should also find out why the person has left his or her previous job. If the person has a history of job hopping very frequently then you have to worry that your company is just being used to get a pay hike.

It is best that you conduct the interview in a relaxed manner so that you get the opportunity to know your prospective employees better. Make sure that you do not rush through the process because you might lose out on employing people with lots of talent because of this.
